Baby Arto was being kept illegally as a pet. The family claimed they found him abandoned by his mother, who had been chased away by dogs. Dressed in baby clothes and a bracelet, Arto was treated like a human child. He was bathed three times a week, destroying his skin's ability to fight infection. And he was fed a diet of human foods. The suffering and fear Arto endured is unthinkable.

He was rescued by our team in November 2023.
After a health check from the BORA vet, Arto was found to have a bloated stomach but was otherwise in good health. Despite the rain, he slept peacefully, clinging to the vet during the four-hour drive back to the BORA rescue centre.
His name, “Arto,” means “treasure” in Indonesian, a reminder of how precious he is.
Young male orangutans normally stay with their mum for around eight years in the wild to learn jungle skills. Now in safe hands, Arto must learn how to climb, forage and build nests from other orangutans and his human carers. He has bonded with another young orangutan, named Harapi, and this has given Arto more confidence and reassurance.
With years of dedicated care and Jungle School ahead of him, Arto is on a path toward a brighter future—one that leads back to the wild, where he truly belongs. But he can only do it with the support of people like you.
