Siti was confiscated by the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) in Lampung Province, Sumatra in May 2021, along with a male infant orangutan named Sudin. They were rescued from the illegal wildlife trade when they were about to be loaded onto a ferry at Bakauhuni Harbor in Lampung. Estimated to be only 18 months of age, these tiny babies would have still been fully dependent on their mothers.

Siti and Sudin were transferred to our partner’s quarantine facility in Jambi, Sumatra, where they underwent full medical checkups. Siti was found to be suffering from bronchitis and Sudin was diagnosed with an inflammatory bowel disease. After a few weeks their health and behaviour improved immensely. They were moved to our Sumatran orangutan release site in the Bukit Tigapuluh Ecosystem in February 2022. They soon commenced Jungle School lessons where they can explore the forest and learn vital survival skills including foraging for food and nest building for their future release.
Siti’s favourite foods include pineapple and banana as well as liana fruits and bamboo stems in the forest. She greatly enjoys Jungle School outings with Sudin where she explores the forest and learns forest skills from other released orangutans.
